Customer uploads fail in two directions.
The security direction is well understood and routinely ignored: accepting whatever arrives, storing it somewhere a browser can reach, and trusting the extension. What is needed is a restricted list of types you actually accept, a size limit, storage outside the public directory with access through a check, and never executing anything that was uploaded. The operational direction is where most of the pain sits. The file has to stay attached to the order through fulfilment so the workshop is looking at the right version, which means one canonical copy rather than a download somebody keeps on a desktop. It has to be usable — a rejected file discovered at production is a day lost, so checking size and format at upload saves the conversation. And it has to be deleted eventually, because customer artwork accumulates indefinitely and nobody has decided how long you are keeping it or why. That last one is a policy question your adviser should answer; the store's job is making the deletion possible.

What is the minimum for handling uploads safely?
A list of accepted types rather than a list of blocked ones, a size limit, storage outside the public directory reached through a check, and nothing uploaded ever being executed. Those four are unremarkable, they are what an attacker is testing for, and they are missing from a great many stores.
Why does the file have to stay with the order?
Because the version somebody downloaded to a desktop is the version that will be produced after the customer sends a correction. One canonical copy attached to the order means the bench is always looking at the current file, which removes an entire category of expensive mistake.
How long should customer files be kept?
That is a question for your adviser rather than for us, because it depends on what the files contain and what you agreed. What we can do is make deletion possible and scheduled rather than theoretical, since artwork otherwise accumulates for years because nobody was asked to decide.
