Shopify Development
Shopify development for brands that have outgrown a template
Shopify development is the work of building a store on Shopify that does what your business needs rather than what a theme allows. We build custom Online Store 2.0 themes and headless storefronts, integrate the apps and APIs your operation depends on, and migrate existing stores onto Shopify without losing search traffic or customer records.

App, payment and fulfilment integration
Migration with a full URL redirect map
Who is this for?
Shopify Development suits the situations below. If none of them describes where you are, the next section says so plainly rather than leaving you to work it out from a sales call.
Brands on a paid theme that now needs behaviour the theme cannot support
Businesses migrating from WooCommerce, Adobe Commerce or BigCommerce
B2B sellers needing customer-specific pricing and purchase rules
Teams launching into new markets with multi-currency and local payments
Stores where app sprawl has made every page slow and nobody owns the fix
Who should not hire us for this?
Every service on this site states who it is not for, and what to do instead. Telling you at the enquiry stage costs us a lead; telling you at the proposal stage costs you a month.
You have fewer than 20 products and no custom logic — a configured theme will do the job and cost far less
You need control of the checkout but do not want Shopify Plus, because Shopify closes the checkout below Plus and no agency can change that
You want to avoid per-transaction platform fees entirely — WooCommerce is the better fit and we will say so
What is included?
6 things make up a Shopify engagement. Anything outside them is real work we can quote separately — it is named here so it is not assumed into a fixed price and argued about later.
Custom Online Store 2.0 theme
Liquid templates and sections written against your requirements, so merchandisers can rearrange pages in the theme editor without a developer.
Headless storefront (where justified)
Hydrogen or a framework of your choice against the Storefront API. We recommend this only where there is a specific technical reason for it.
App, payment and fulfilment integration
Payments, subscriptions, reviews, email and shipping wired up and tested end to end, using theme app extensions rather than script injection.
Migration with a redirect map
Products, collections, customers and order history moved through the Admin API, with every legacy URL mapped to its new path before launch.
ERP and back-office sync
Admin API and webhook integration to accounting, inventory or ERP, so stock and orders stop being copied between systems by hand.
Performance and Core Web Vitals work
App audit first, then image sizing, render order and third-party tags. Theme code is usually the smallest of the four contributions.
How does a Shopify project actually run?
A Shopify engagement runs in 6 stages. Each one below names what happens, what it produces and how long it takes, taken from projects we have actually run rather than from a best case.
- 6
- named stages, each with a deliverable
- 8 weeks
- typical total, discovery to launch
- 1 day
- to a fixed price band from your brief
Discovery and platform fit
1 week
We audit your catalogue, order volume, integrations and business rules to confirm Shopify is the right platform for what you are doing, and document every place it will need extending with an app, a Shopify Function or custom code before anyone writes any.
Information architecture and UX
1–2 weeks
We map collections, navigation, filtering and the checkout path, then wireframe the four templates that carry most of the revenue — home, collection, product and cart — so the structure is agreed before any visual design work starts.
Design
2 weeks
We design the full template set in Figma against a component library, so every page is assembled from the same reusable parts rather than designed in isolation. That is what keeps the build predictable and the store consistent as it grows.
Build
3–4 weeks
We develop the theme in Liquid using Online Store 2.0 sections, wire up the apps and APIs your operation depends on, and configure Shopify Markets, shipping and tax for each selling region rather than assuming a single home market.
Migration and QA
1–2 weeks
We migrate products, customers, orders and URLs with a complete redirect map, then test checkout, payments, tax and every transactional email across devices. Customer passwords cannot transfer, so the reset flow is written and scheduled here, not discovered after launch.
Launch and optimisation
1 week onwards
We launch, then monitor Core Web Vitals and checkout completion for the first weeks and prioritise fixes by where real users actually drop out, rather than by what looked most likely to matter before anyone had used the store.
What do we build it with?
Named tools, with the reason each one is in the list. A stack section that names no technologies is a stack section that could belong to any agency on any platform, which makes it worth nothing to anyone deciding between them.
Liquid and Online Store 2.0 sections
Lets merchandisers rearrange pages without a developer, which is the difference between a store your team can run and one that needs us for every change.
Metafields and metaobjects
Structured content modelled properly instead of being pasted into product descriptions, so it can be queried, reused and templated.
Shopify Functions
Discount, shipping and payment logic that runs on Shopify's own infrastructure rather than as a third-party app adding weight to every page.
Shopify Markets
Multi-currency, multi-region pricing and local payment methods without running a separate store per country.
Hydrogen and the Storefront API
The headless route. Highest performance ceiling, and every future change needs a developer — a trade worth making only with a clear reason.
Admin API and webhooks
How ERP, accounting and inventory systems stay in sync without anyone exporting a spreadsheet.
Shopify Flow
Operational automation for tagging, fraud review and fulfilment routing, built where the data already lives.
What does it connect to?
7 named
These are the systems we have connected to stores on this platform. Anything not on the list is usually still possible — it is a scoping question about the API it exposes, not a refusal.
- Shop Pay, Stripe, Klarna, PayPal and Apple Pay
- Klaviyo, Mailchimp and HubSpot
- Judge.me and Okendo
- Recharge and Shopify Subscriptions
- ShipStation, Royal Mail and ShipBob
- Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite via the Admin API
- GA4, Plausible and Shopify Analytics
What this looked like on a real project

NitroPress
NitroPress sells nitro cold brew makers from London into eighty currencies, in three machine tiers, alongside a spare-parts catalogue and a wholesale channel. We built the storefront from scratch, taking it from structure and UX planning through interface design to full development on Shopify.

Choosing between a configured theme and a custom Shopify build, on the criteria that actually decide it
| Criterion | Configured theme | Custom build | Headless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical timeline | 2–3 weeks | 6–10 weeks | 12–16 weeks |
| Upfront cost | Lowest | Middle | Highest |
| Design freedom | The theme's limits | Complete | Complete |
| Performance ceiling | Theme-dependent | High | Highest |
| Ongoing maintenance | Lowest | Moderate | Highest |
| Needs a developer to change | Rarely | Sometimes | Always |
| Best for | Under 50 products, standard flow | Custom logic, many templates | Multi-brand or extreme performance needs |
| What we would tell you | Start here if it fits. Most stores never need more. | Right for most brands past their first growth stage. | Only with a specific technical reason, never by default. |
Two things we learned doing the work
Two things break in a Shopify migration, and neither is the catalogue
The catalogue is the part everyone worries about, and it is the part that migrates most reliably. The two that cause trouble are URL structure and customer passwords.
Shopify enforces /products/, /collections/ and /pages/ prefixes. Almost
every legacy URL therefore changes, and every one needs a redirect — not a
sample, all of them. Customer passwords cannot be migrated at all, on any
platform, because they are stored hashed. Customers must reset, which means the
reset email has to be written, scheduled and tested before launch rather than
discovered afterwards when the support queue fills up.
The honest test for Shopify Plus
Plus is sold on revenue thresholds. That is not the test. The test is whether you need to modify the checkout.
Below Plus, Shopify’s checkout is closed. You can style it, and that is all. If your business needs custom validation, B2B purchase rules or bespoke steps at checkout, Plus is the only route on Shopify — and that single requirement often costs more than everything else on the build combined. Knowing this before you scope is worth more than any feature list.
Where do we deliver this?
We work with brands across the United Kingdom and United States from our studio in Rajkot. We hold no office in any of the cities below and do not imply otherwise anywhere on this site.
- London
- Manchester
- New York
What changes by market is not how we build but what a store there has to get right — payment habits, hosting, obligations and conventions all differ enough to be worth their own page. The near me page answers the question people actually type into a search box.

Shopify questions we are asked before a project starts
The questions below come up most often about Shopify development, answered in full rather than deferred to a call. None of them is answered on another page of this site.
How much does custom Shopify development cost?
Cost is driven by template count, integration complexity and whether a migration is involved. A configured theme with light customisation sits at the bottom of the range; a custom build with bespoke apps and ERP integration sits well above it. We scope against your actual requirements and give a fixed band before any work starts.
What is the difference between a Shopify theme and a custom Shopify build?
A theme is pre-built and configured through Shopify's admin, so you are limited to the options its developer chose to expose. A custom build means writing the Liquid templates and sections yourself, so behaviour is defined by your requirements rather than someone else's assumptions. Themes launch faster; custom builds do things themes cannot.
Do I need Shopify Plus, or is standard Shopify enough?
The deciding factor is checkout. Below Shopify Plus the checkout is closed — you can style it but cannot change its logic. If you need custom validation, B2B rules or bespoke steps at checkout, Plus is the only route. Revenue thresholds are how Plus is sold, but checkout control is what you are actually buying.
Can you migrate my store from WooCommerce to Shopify?
Yes. Products, collections, customers and order history migrate through the Admin API. Two things need planning: URL structure changes because Shopify enforces its own path prefixes, so every legacy URL needs a redirect; and customer passwords cannot transfer, so customers must reset. Both are solvable, but both must be handled before launch.
What is Shopify Liquid and do I need a developer who knows it?
Liquid is Shopify's templating language, used to build every theme on the platform. Any change beyond what the theme editor exposes requires editing Liquid. If your store only needs configuration, you do not need a Liquid developer. If you need behaviour the theme does not offer, Liquid is the only way to get it.
Can Shopify handle B2B and wholesale pricing?
Yes, through Shopify's B2B features on Plus, which support company accounts, customer-specific catalogues, payment terms and volume pricing. Below Plus, B2B is possible through apps or a separate wholesale storefront, but the experience is compromised. If wholesale is a meaningful part of your revenue, budget for Plus rather than working around its absence.
How do I make my Shopify store faster?
Start with apps, not code. Every app injecting a script adds render-blocking weight to every page, including pages where it does nothing. Audit the app list and remove what is not earning its cost. After that, address image sizing, above-the-fold render order, and third-party tags. Theme optimisation matters least of the four.
What does a Shopify Partner agency give me that a freelancer doesn't?
Partner status gives access to development stores, Partner support channels, and early visibility of platform changes. The more practical difference is continuity: an agency does not become unavailable, and design, development and integration sit in one team. For a straightforward theme setup a freelancer is genuinely the better-value option.
Can you build a headless Shopify storefront?
Yes, using Hydrogen or a framework of your choice against the Storefront API. Headless gives complete control over the frontend and the highest performance ceiling. It also means every change needs a developer, and you lose the theme editor entirely. We recommend it only where there is a specific technical reason, not by default.
What ongoing costs should I expect after a Shopify build?
Shopify's platform subscription, transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments, and app subscriptions — which are usually the largest and least predictable line. Budget for app costs explicitly before launch, because they recur monthly and accumulate quietly. Development costs after launch depend on how often the store changes.
