Shopify development in New York

A donation at the checkout is a small ask at a moment of maximum goodwill, and it is also an extra decision on the screen where extra decisions cost the most. Whether it helps depends almost entirely on how it is presented.

Asking customers to give at the checkout

The mechanics are simple and the design choices are not.

A pre-ticked donation is technically effective and reliably resented, and the resentment attaches to your brand rather than to the cause. An amount chosen by the customer performs worse than a small set of suggestions, and rounding up to the nearest unit performs well precisely because it is not really a decision. What matters more than the mechanism is specificity: a named organisation with a sentence about what the money does raises more than a general appeal, and publishing what was raised afterwards is what makes the second year work. The operational side deserves attention before launch rather than after. Donations collected alongside a sale are not your revenue and should not be treated as such in your accounts, refunds have to decide whether the donation comes back too, and somebody has to actually transfer the money on a schedule. Businesses that add the button without answering those three end up with a liability and an awkward question at the year end.

We have no office in New York. Our studio is in Rajkot, India, and every project here is delivered remotely — if a supplier who can attend your premises matters to you, that is a fair requirement and we do not meet it.

What a Shopify development project includes

Three things, and they are the same wherever you are. What changes is the subject above.

  • Custom Online Store 2.0 theme or headless storefront

  • App, payment and fulfilment integration

  • Migration with a full URL redirect map

The other three, and what each one covers

Each answers a different question for New York businesses. None of them repeats this page.

Shopify development questions from New York

Three questions about the subject above. How we work, what it costs and who owns the code are answered on the service page.

Should the donation be pre-ticked?

No. It raises more in the first month and the resentment attaches to your brand rather than to the cause, which is a poor trade for a business asking customers to think well of it. An unticked round-up with a named recipient performs respectably and nobody objects to it.

Fixed amounts or let the customer choose?

A small set of suggestions beats an open field, and rounding up to the nearest unit beats both, because it is barely a decision. The more thinking the ask requires, the more it costs you on a screen where the customer was already deciding something else.

What has to be settled before launch?

Three things: that the money is not your revenue and is not accounted for as such, what happens to the donation when the order is refunded, and who transfers the funds and how often. Adding the button without those answers creates a liability and an awkward year end.
