Checking that what shipped matches what was charged
The comparison is between three records that rarely meet: what the customer was charged, what the warehouse says it sent, and what the carrier invoiced.
Each pair disagrees in a characteristic way. Charged against shipped catches substitutions, short shipments and orders that were partly cancelled without the refund following. Shipped against invoiced catches the carrier surcharges — residential delivery, remote area, a corrected weight — which are individually trivial and reliably add up to a real number over a quarter. Automating it means the matching happens continuously and a person sees only the exceptions, which is the only way this ever gets done, because doing it by hand is boring enough to be deferred indefinitely. Two things make it worth having beyond the recovered money. Repeated surcharges point at something structural, usually address data or declared dimensions, which is fixable at the source. And knowing the real delivered cost per order is what makes any conversation about free delivery thresholds or shipping prices an informed one.

What does this actually recover?
Individually trivial amounts that matter in aggregate: corrected weights, surcharges for areas or delivery types, and refunds that never followed a cancelled line. None of them is worth chasing alone, which is exactly why nobody does, and over a quarter they add to something worth having.
Why not check this by hand?
Because it is boring enough to be deferred indefinitely. Reconciliation that depends on somebody choosing to spend an afternoon on it happens twice and then stops, whereas a continuous match that surfaces only the disagreements is a few minutes a week and survives.
What is the benefit beyond the money?
