UI/UX design in Houston

Form validation decides whether correcting a mistake is a small moment or the reason somebody abandons a purchase. The common patterns get the timing wrong in both directions: complaining about a field before it has been finished, or waiting until submission to report six problems at once.

The subjectui-ux-design × houston

Telling somebody their answer is wrong, at the right moment

The rule that works is to validate a field when the customer leaves it, not while they are typing in it.

Complaining about an incomplete email address halfway through is telling somebody they are wrong for not having finished, and it trains people to distrust the messages. Waiting until submission is worse at scale, because six errors reported together on a long form reads as failure rather than as correction, and the customer has to hunt for each one. Where the message goes matters as much as when: beside the field, in text, describing what to do rather than what is wrong. Enter a date as day, month, year beats invalid input by a distance nobody should have to argue about. Two things are worth removing entirely. Rejecting valid data because a pattern was written too narrowly — telephone numbers and postcodes are the usual victims — is a fault that turns customers away silently. And clearing a field on error, so somebody retypes everything, is a punishment nobody designed on purpose and everybody has met.

We have no office in Houston. Our studio is in Rajkot, India, and every project here is delivered remotely — if a supplier who can attend your premises matters to you, that is a fair requirement and we do not meet it.

What a UI/UX design project includes

Three things, and they are the same wherever you are. What changes is the subject above.

  • UX audit against a published checklist

  • Redesign of the highest-revenue templates

  • Design system and tokens, where they earn their cost

The other three, and what each one covers

Each answers a different question for Houston businesses. None of them repeats this page.

UI/UX design questions from Houston

Three questions about the subject above. How we work, what it costs and who owns the code are answered on the service page.

When should a field be checked?

When the customer leaves it. Checking while they type means complaining about an incomplete entry, which reads as being told off for not having finished yet, and people quickly learn to ignore messages that appear before they were ready to be judged.

What should an error message say?

What to do, beside the field, in words. Enter a date as day, month, year is useful. Invalid input is not, because it tells the customer they are wrong without telling them how to be right, which leaves them guessing at your rules on the screen where they least want to.

What causes silent losses?

Patterns written too narrowly. Telephone numbers, postcodes and names with punctuation are the usual victims, and a customer with a perfectly valid entry that your rule rejects has no route forward at all. They leave, and nothing in your data records that it happened.
