A listing page is a wall of small images, and each one has a fraction of a second to communicate what the product is. Photographs composed for a full-width product page frequently say nothing at all once they are reduced to a square on a phone, which is where most of the browsing happens.
What a thumbnail has to say at that size
The thumbnail is doing a different job from the product photograph and deserves to be treated as a separate decision.
It has to make the item recognisable at a glance, which usually means the product filling the frame rather than sitting in an artful composition, consistent framing across the range so the eye can compare, and enough contrast against the page background that the edges are visible. Where products differ mainly in a detail — a finish, a fitting, a pattern — the thumbnail has to show that detail rather than the whole object, because a grid of twenty near-identical shapes is a grid nobody can use. Consistency matters more than quality here. A range photographed by three people over five years, at different distances and on different backgrounds, looks disorganised at thumbnail size even when every individual image is excellent, and the customer reads that as a business that does not have its range under control.

Should the thumbnail be the product photograph?
Frequently not. A composition that works full width often says nothing reduced to a square on a phone, and the listing is where most of the browsing happens. Cropping for the thumbnail is a separate decision worth taking deliberately rather than inheriting from the first image.
What matters more, quality or consistency?
Consistency, at this size. A range shot by three people over five years at different distances looks disorganised in a grid even when every image is individually excellent, and customers read that visual inconsistency as a business that does not have its range under control.
How do we handle near-identical products?
Show the difference rather than the object. If items vary by a finish or a fitting, twenty thumbnails of the same silhouette are unusable, and cropping each to the part that differs turns the grid back into something a customer can actually choose from.
