Business customers arrive expecting to be recognised, and a store designed for consumers treats them as a stranger with a card. The first order is where a trade relationship is either established or handed to a competitor who made it easier.
The first order from a new trade customer
The gap between what a trade buyer needs and what a consumer checkout offers shows up immediately.
They want to know whether they can be invoiced, what their price is, whether their delivery address can be one of several, and who to speak to if something is wrong — none of which a standard flow asks about or answers. Designing for it means an obvious route for business customers from the first screen rather than a link in the footer, an application process that states plainly what happens next and how long it takes, and a way to place the first order while that is being processed rather than waiting. The detail that matters most is what happens between applying and being approved. A buyer who submits a form and hears nothing for three days has already bought elsewhere, so an immediate acknowledgement with a realistic timescale is worth more than any amount of design elsewhere on the page. After approval, the account has to actually show the difference, because a trade login that looks identical to the public site has told the customer their status is decorative.
We have no office in Liverpool. Our studio is in Rajkot, India, and every project here is delivered remotely — if a supplier who can attend your premises matters to you, that is a fair requirement and we do not meet it.

What matters most in the first hour?
An acknowledgement with a realistic timescale. A buyer who submits an application and hears nothing for three days has already ordered from somebody else, and no amount of design further along the process recovers a customer who concluded on the first afternoon that nobody was there.
Should they be able to order before approval?
Wherever possible, yes, on ordinary terms. Making somebody wait to spend money is a strange position to take, and the first order placed at the public price while an account is set up is a relationship started rather than a lead sitting in a queue behind an approval process.
What does an approved account need to show?
The difference. Their prices, their addresses, their order history and their contact. A trade login that looks identical to the public site has told the customer that their status is decorative, which is worse than not having offered an account in the first place.
