Ecommerce website development for Icelandic businesses
Ecommerce development for Icelandic businesses is shaped by isolation and scale. Almost everything sold here is imported, the domestic customer base is smaller than most European cities, and shipping anything in or out crosses a customs border. We build remotely from Rajkot and hold no Icelandic office.
How do you work with Icelandic clients?
We hold no Icelandic office.
Work is delivered from our studio in Rajkot on a shared board you can open at any time, with every decision written down the day it is made and scope changes priced in writing before they are built. What is specific to Iceland is that the market arithmetic changes what is worth building. A domestic audience smaller than many European cities means a store cannot usually justify the kind of build a German or French business would commission, and it also means the interesting revenue is frequently outside the country — visitors who bought something here and want it again, or an export market for a product that is genuinely Icelandic. Those are two different stores, and deciding which you are building matters more than any platform question. On the operational side, being outside the EU customs union means import handling on inbound stock and export paperwork on outbound orders, both of which need to be in the product data rather than improvised. Invoicing is in euro or Icelandic krona. Contracts are governed by the laws of India, stated plainly in our terms and worth raising with your adviser before signing.
What we build
Four services, delivered the same way wherever you are: Shopify stores, WooCommerce stores, the interface design that decides whether either converts, and the automation that removes manual work from running them.
- Shopify in Europe
Shopify Development
Shopify development is the work of building a store on Shopify that does what your business needs rather than what a theme allows.
- WooCommerce in Europe
WooCommerce Development
WooCommerce development is the work of building a store on WordPress and WooCommerce, where you host the software and own the database outright.
- UI/UX in Europe
UI/UX Design
Ecommerce UI/UX design is the work of deciding how a store looks and how customers move through it, from landing page to completed order.
- AI in Europe
AI Automation
AI automation for ecommerce means using language models and workflow tools to remove repetitive work from running a store.
Which platforms dominate in Iceland?
Our observation, not sourced data
What we see in the Icelandic market, stated as our observation rather than as sourced data: Shopify dominates, and for good reason at this scale — the hosted model removes an operational burden that a small domestic team would otherwise carry. WooCommerce appears where a business already runs WordPress. The pattern worth naming is that budgets here are smaller and the honest recommendation is more often a well-configured theme than a bespoke build, which is a conversation we would rather have early.
What does a Icelandic store actually have to handle?
Every layer below is something a store selling in Iceland has to get right, and most of them are decided before a line of code is written. Thresholds and rates are deliberately not quoted here — they change, and the primary sources are linked further down.
| Layer | What Icelandic stores usually need |
|---|---|
| Currency | Icelandic krona domestically, with euro or dollars for export sales |
| Payment methods | Cards are dominant, with domestic bank options alongside |
| Customs | Outside the EU customs union — inbound stock and outbound orders both cross a border |
| Shipping carriers | Islandsposturinn, DHL, UPS; air freight for anything urgent |
| Market size | A domestic audience smaller than many European cities, so export often carries the revenue |
| Tax handling | Icelandic VAT, with import handling on most stock |
| Data protection | GDPR applies through the EEA agreement, supervised by Personuvernd |
| Consumer rights | A withdrawal right applies on most distance sales |
Cities we cover in Iceland
Each city page describes what commerce actually looks like there rather than repeating this one. If your city is not listed, the service is identical — we simply have not written a page worth publishing about it yet.

Data and consumer rules
Primary sources
An Icelandic store sits inside the European Economic Area for data and consumer rules and outside the customs union for goods, which is the same split Norway lives with. GDPR applies through the EEA agreement and is supervised by Personuvernd, governing what you collect, why, how long you keep it and what a customer can require you to erase. Consumer law gives a withdrawal right on most distance sales, stated before purchase rather than buried in terms. Customs applies to goods in both directions, so a store selling abroad needs commodity classifications and country of origin on its products, and a store importing stock carries the same information on the way in. We build the storefront controls and the product data fields both require. Which obligations apply to your business is a question for your own adviser, and nothing here is legal advice.
Nothing on this page is legal or tax advice.
Where Icelandic businesses sell next
These are the markets clients in Iceland most often ask about once the first store is trading. Each has its own payment habits, carriers and regulator, and a store built for one does not automatically work in the next. Every other market we cover is listed underneath.

Icelandic questions we are asked
5 questions specific to working with us from Iceland, including the one most agencies avoid: whether anybody at this studio is actually in the country.
Do you have an Icelandic office?
No. We work from Rajkot, India, and this page says so rather than implying a Reykjavik address. You get a named contact who stays with the account, a shared board you can open at any time, and replies within one business day. If somebody physically present is a requirement, we do not meet it.
Is a bespoke store worth it for a market this size?
Frequently not, and we would rather say so than sell you one. A well-configured theme with strong photography and honest product copy serves most Icelandic catalogues better than a bespoke build at several times the cost. Custom work earns its place when the pricing or the integrations genuinely demand it.
Should we sell to visitors after they leave?
For many Icelandic businesses that is where the growth is, and it is a different store from a domestic one. It needs export documentation, international shipping rates that do not embarrass you, and pricing in a currency the buyer recognises. Worth deciding deliberately rather than discovering.
How do we handle shipping costs honestly?
By quoting them properly rather than absorbing them into the price or apologising for them. Shipping to and from an island is expensive, buyers know it, and a real number at checkout is better received than a surprise. Where a product genuinely cannot ship economically, saying so saves everybody time.
Does GDPR apply to us?
It applies through the EEA agreement and is supervised domestically, so the obligations look much like an EU store. What does not follow is customs, since Iceland is outside the customs union. Being inside one framework and outside the other is the combination that most often surprises sellers here.
